Ask Alex about... Complete Fretboard Diagram: 24 frets

ask alex!

Key ideas:

  • After fret 12, note layout repeats itself identically. Learn the fretboard up to fret 12 and you already know the whole thing!

  • Even so, a look at the full 24 fret chart can be useful! Check it out!

Practice tips to learn the fretboard...
    by: Alex

    Moe,

Thanks for your comments and your questions.
My big tip for you is SING WHAT YOU PLAY.

Start with scales. Play them along the fretboard, i.e. on single strings. Sing along. Get rid of that voice shyness (we all have it) and sing loud and clear using any vowel that suits you. I would go for "Ah".

Then you can start doing the same thing across the fretboard, i.e. several strings. Start by playing ONLY 1 OCTAVE of your scales.

Rinse and repeat until you get a really good feel of your scales and modes. Next, start improvising short phrases. Don't forget to SING THEM OUTLOUD!!!. This trains you to think with your ears and not with your fingers.

Hope this helps. Stay tuned: I'll post a video right here about this next week!

    Cheers:

    Alex

    Practice tips?
    by: Moe

    Hey Alex,

I just stumbled onto your articles and I really enjoyed them. Thanks for the info but I do have a question. As for actual practice and learning my fretboard what are the best (best meaning smartest most thorough) ways to do so?

I know you mentioned practicing scales on the individual strings and also improvising with said scales but is there anything else? I've only been playing for a year and a half so I have very little understanding as to how everything works together, even in the most general sense.

I'll continue to read more and study your articles. Thanks again.

    Moe
