music quotes

Welcome to GTiD's music quotes! These quotes are taken from our BLOG, where one is published -almost- daily, for your inspiration (as of 04.05.09). So you can expect this section to grow pretty quickly!

You can explore this section in two ways: The fisrt is to see the quotes in the order in which they were published via our RSS feed and Blog. Don't forget to subscribe!

Guitar Theory Blog

The second second way is to explore by category. We have Classical Music Quotes, Jazz Quotes, Rock Quotes, and more coming soon!

Disclaimer: These quotes are not intended to represent my own points of view. I've chosen them because each is profoundly revealing in two ways:

  • Each music quote says a lot about the person who said it, and about his time and context: about more generalized views on music in his day and time.
  • Secondly, each quote contains something more universal. Each gives a glimpse of the truth to be found in music (if there is any!).

  • Only extremely cheesy quotes have been omitted ;-)

So, I hope you enjoy this kaleidoscope of ideas as much as I have enjoyed putting it together it for you!!!

music quote of the day. 07.06.09

"Music should enrich the soul; it should teach spirituality by showing a person a portion of himself that he would not discover otherwise. It's easy to rediscover part of yourself, but through art you can be shown part of yourself you never knew existed. That's the real mission of art. The artist has to find something within himself that's universal and which he can put into terms that are communicable to other people. The magic of it is that art can communicate to a person without his realizing it... enrichment, that's the function of music."
    -Bill Evans

music quote of the day. 07.07.09

"Those are miracles that no merely human brain can work. The artist is merely the sound conduct of a Force that dictates to him what he should do."
    -Johannes Brahms

music quote of the day. 08.19.09

"It's more than beauty that I feel in music -that I think that musicians feel in music. What we know we feel we'd like to convey to the listener. We hope that this can be shared by all. I think, basically, that's about what it is we're trying to do. If you ask me that question, I might say this today and tomorrow something entirely different, because there are many things to do in music.

But over-all, I think the main thing a musician would like to do is to give a picture to the listener of the many wonderful things he knows and senses in the universe. That's what music is to me -it's just another way of saying this is a big, beautiful universe we live in, that's been given to us, and here's an example of just how magnificent and encompassing it is. That's what I would like to do, I think that's one of the greatest things you can do in life, and we try to do it in some way. The musician's way is through his music."

-John Coltrane (When asked what he and Eric Dolphy were trying to achieve)
